Abstract
Mechanical properties of nanoporous solids exhibit a strongly superlinear dependence on porosity. Hence, ultralow-density solids have notoriously poor mechanical properties. This remains the major factor limiting many potential energy-related applications of these materials. For example, silica nanofoams with densities below ~100 mg/cc have a very low Young’s modulus of
