Abstract
The optical properties of the transparent polymers like PMMA, PC and PET can be altered to a great extent by swift heavy ion (SHI). The SHI induced track by controlling the density of and shape is used to control the refractive index and the optical band gap of the polymers in the range of 3.5 to 2.0 eV. These tracks can be decorated with nano phosphors materials like ZnS, CdS and ZnO.
Thin films of nano phosphor polymer composites are synthesized by solution cast method, in the range of 20-30 micron by uniformly dispersing the phosphors up to 0.1 to 5% by weight. These films have optical properties related to modifications in their nano structure which has been modified and controlled by SHI.
We have found significant improvement on the yield in the photo emission as well as change in the characteristic of emission. These could be explained on the basis of coherent photon scattering from the nano phosphors and superposition in the optical channels generated by SHI be redistribution of nano phosphors in the matrix.
