Abstract

The combination of room temperature Pb+ ion implantation into silica films followed by a specific two step furnace annealing treatment is explored to allow the formation of dense bi-dimensional arrays of Pb nanoparticles (NP) at the SiO2/Si (001) interfaces. The samples are investigated by Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry and Transmission Electron Microscopy. The results obtained show that classical nucleation and growth behavior can be suppressed by the formation of thermally stable Pb nanoclusters presenting anomalous superheating temperatures (DT > 500 oC). This behavior has been previously observed for Sn+ implanted samples [1] and is discussed as a property of the group 14 elements presenting a transition from metallic to covalent bounds [2,3]. The bi-dimensional NP system is characterized by a mean diameter of 8 nm, a particle number density ~ 4 1011 cm-2. The pair correlation function indicates the onset of self-organization process.
